Crafting Culinary Spaces: Exploring Kitchen Cabinet Construction, Finishes, and Uses
Sponsored By Wolf Home Products
Presented By Brian Barron
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

A study of the US cabinet market and cabinet construction methods including substrates, composition, hardware, and finishes.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the categories that go in to making up the domestic kitchen cabinet market. Knock down cabinets flat stacked and shipped from overseas and how they are competing against domestic cabinet makers with higher labor costs against countries with no labor laws.
  2. Identify and compare various substrates and composition of kitchen cabinets. How furniture board and MDF are made with binders and materials that can off gas.
  3. Examine the features and benefits of various finish options for kitchen cabinets. How these finishes are applied regarding robotics for paint and stain booths as well as capturing and recycling fumes/off gas. Discussion on off gassing of compounds in Resins such as thermofoil and melamine cabinet finishes.
  4. Define and compare framed and frameless cabinets, as well as factory built versus assembled cabinets. These differences play a significant role in how they are installed as well as the sturdiness and safety of hanging heavier weights/cabinet materials.
  5. Discuss available and new hardware options as well as best installation practices for safe and sturdy install.

Managing Condensation, Water Intrusion, and Energy in the Real World - 1
Sponsored By PROSOCO
Presented By Alley Mathson
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour

Window opening air and water leakage has been a difficult problem for the construction industry. This course evaluates building failures, conventional construction approaches, and new developments in waterproofing techniques to show a path forward for designers seeking higher-performing wall assemblies.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain why job-site conditions should be used as systems engineering requirements in construction product development.
  2. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between silicone, urethane, and STP sealants.
  3. Describe the multi-step weatherproofing process of conventional window installation and how such installations fare in real-world testing conditions.
  4. Explain new window weatherproofing techniques using liquid flashing membranes.
  5. Instruct others on construction defect remediation using STP technology through case-study examples.

Hit the Deck! Solution Paths to Successful Exterior Deck Installations
Sponsored By Noble Company
Presented By Dean Moilanen
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 IDCEC HSW CEU(s)

The use of ceramic tile & natural stone on exterior decks has become increasingly popular for both residential and commercial projects.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Examine the history of exterior deck installation techniques & challenges.
  2. Review the nature of exterior deck failures and the role legacy means & methods play in evolution of best practices.
  3. Highlight misinformation, misperceptions, and ineffective installation practices which are fueling the increase in shortened life cycles of exterior deck installations.
  4. The presentation culminates with supportive documentation and collaborative information from independent forensic and waterproofing consultants, strengthening the assertions and issues raised, and maps out a critical path of proactive specification language and installation techniques designed to minimize the incident of exterior deck failures, as well as promoting evolving best practices. By elevating materials, methods, and best practices, the risk of remediation associated with poorly installed exterior decks can be greatly reduced.

Going Linear
Sponsored By Noble Company
Presented By Dean Moilanen
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

Going Linear provides a step-by-step approach to the growing trend in design: Linear Drains! Technical advancements have allowed manufacturers to produce larger dimensional tiles for installation, but the use of those tiles with a typical drain requires relief cuts taking away from the design intent.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the evolution of linear shower drains and how current models meet needs for sustainable design.
  2. Understand the benefits of linear drains in contemporary designs, accessible showers and help ensure safety for users.
  3. Understand characteristics of various linear drains and how those characteristics help meet specific project requirements and address environmental concerns.
  4. Understand the practical considerations in shower designs including drainage capacity, waterproofing systems to ensure durable, watertight installations.
