Moisture Management & Eco Rainscreen Wall Systems
Sponsored By Fiberon
Presented By Brandon Greer
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

Rain is one of the most important things to control in wall construction for both a building’s structural integrity and the occupants’ health. Join us in this one-hour course as we discuss the basic building science of moisture management and sustainable rainscreen systems.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify potential moisture management issues that can cause harm to both a building’s aesthetic and structural integrity as well as occupants’ health and safety.
  2. List four basic components of rainscreen wall systems that help minimize rainwater passage into the wall and effectively dissipates any water remaining back to the exterior.
  3. Compare and contrast the suitability of various cladding materials to serve in rainscreen systems, particularly their durability, sustainability, and safety.
  4. Evaluate proper exterior wall design as a rain screen system for effective moisture management.

Sustainable Roofing: Building a Better Future
Sponsored By Eagle Roofing
Presented By David Vallas
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour
1 GBCI LEED Specific BD+C

Imagine a roof that not only protects you from the elements but also champions sustainability and occupant safety—that's the promise of concrete roofing materials. While evaluating options like asphalt shingles and metal roofs, it's essential to consider their environmental impacts and overall performance.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Evaluate the environmental impacts of leading sloped roof materials, such as asphalt shingles and metal roofs, in relation to health, safety, and welfare considerations, occupant safety, and overall building performance.
  2. Describe how sustainable concrete roofs can support LEED v4.1 BD+C goals such as energy efficiency and material transparency.
  3. Explore how concrete roofs can help support LEED v4.1 BD+C resilient design goals and protect occupants from fire, high winds, extreme heat, and hailstorms.
  4. Discuss how sustainable concrete roofs advance LEED v4.1 BD+C circular economy goals through material recycling and landfill waste reduction strategies.
  5. Examine the performance and impacts of different roofing materials through case studies, focusing on their contributions to occupant safety, durability, and environmental welfare.

The Devil is in the Details - A Thorough Examination of the Need for Clarification in Specifications
Sponsored By Noble Company
Presented By Dean Moilanen
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

The quest for transparency of specifications and execution in the field is a never-ending journey. The means and methods of construction are ever-evolving. The ways in which we access information has changed radically over the years. The demands of owners to bring projects to fruition with ever more demanding timelines is no secret.

Learning Objectives:
  1. We will use relevant examples from Division 9 “real life” disconnects between a manufacturer’s requirements, a specification writer’s language, and the ultimate end result in the field.
  2. We will examine current ANSI & ASTM language, various examples of manufacturer specification language, and some reoccurring specification mis-fires which occur in spite of everyone’s best intentions.
  3. We will review actual case study examples to illustrate possible resolution paths.
  4. At the conclusion of the presentation, the examples provided will offer timely solutions of specific on-going “fixes”, and hopefully be a jumping off point for closer communication between all stakeholders to minimize future “punch list” issues.

Protecting People and Property: Fortifying Building Safety with Ballistic, Blast, Storm Impact & Forced Entry Solutions
Presented By Wade Arnold
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

As the number and volatility of threats to facility security and safety continue to escalate, protection is becoming paramount in the scope of today’s facility design.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify security threats which dictate design standards and product performance criteria
  2. Compare and contrast design options to fortify buildings with security, safety, and aesthetics in mind
  3. Define the different levels of ballistic, blast, and forced entry testing standards
  4. Properly specify ballistic, blast, forced entry and storm impact fenestration solutions

Elevate Your Outdoors: The Art of Designing Functional Living Spaces
Sponsored By Wolf Home Products
Presented By Jason Foura
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)

Overview of the outdoor living space and materials used in outdoor living design. Material selection, care and design, will be discussed, and common misconceptions will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the evolution of the outdoor living market. Discuss how new materials have longer sustainability on life cycle costs and how wood and older materials have continued to create maintenance issues and if not maintained can create safety issues with Code related materials on decking and railing.
  2. Address trends and materials used in outdoor living spaces. Trends are moving toward more Aluminum railing items. Some competitors don’t have IRC and IBC coded materials in the field.
  3. Apply standard design principles and how they relate to outdoor living spaces. Many of the design principles relate to safety because of life cycle maintenance as well as improper flashing and installation that lead to unsafe building practices.
  4. Identify and explain common misconceptions and safety issues in designing outdoor living spaces. Decking today has many options when it comes to installation and using the proper installation hardware. We review all code rulings for decking and railing.
  5. Explain proper use and care of outdoor living spaces and how to avoid them for extended performance. We review how some chemicals can harm the decking material and which products can be safely used to provide a non-toxic method to maintaining the life of your deck and rail material. Some products can react to PVC and cause issues to the capstop.

Healthy Interiors: Using the WELL Building Standard to Design Commercial Spaces of the Future
Sponsored By Excel Dryer, Inc.
1 AIA HSW/LU CE Hour(s)
1 GBCI General Hour
1 IDCEC HSW CEU(s)
1 IWBI WELL Specific

This course will explore a real-life example of a 5,000-square-foot office expansion recently completed in Western Massachusetts. We’ll take a deep dive into the owner’s and architect’s primary goals for the space; that it be beautiful, healthy, sustainable, and functional.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define healthy and sustainable building in the post-COVID design era.
  2. Identify potential project goals related to the health and well-being of building occupants and the value of an integrated approach to design.
  3. Recognize how the strategies within the WELL Building Standard™ can be leveraged to support occupant health and well-being, sustainability, flexibility, and aesthetics.
  4. Learn about new product solutions for providing touchless hand hygiene in and outside of the restrooms.
  5. And, apply lessons learned from a real project to support future commercial office design projects.
